Yoga teacher fired after glare at Facebook worker Looks may not kill, but they can get you fired. That's what a Northern California yoga instructor found after leading sessions at Facebook's Menlo Park campus. The instructor, Alice Van Ness, said she got fired after she glared at a Facebook employee who texted during a class in June. "The whole point for most people going to yoga is that it's disconnecting from the outside world," said Van Ness, a 35-year-old San Carlos resident who has taught yoga for six years. "If you are bringing your phone into class, why are you even there?" Van Ness told the Facebook class to turn their phones off after seeing a female employee with a cellphone out. Later, while demonstrating a difficult pose, she caught the same worker typing on her phone. Van Ness said she stayed silent, but shot the woman a disapproving look. The employee stepped out before returning to the class, Van Ness said. According to a termination letter from Plus One Health Management that was provided to The Associated Press by Van Ness, she was warned prior to the class that she could not enforce a cellphone ban. David Milani, a representative of Plus One Health Management, declined to comment specifically on Van Ness' case. But he said company instructors who teach at some companies including Facebook are required to allow fitness members to pick up their phones during class. Van Ness thought it would blow over, until she was fired two weeks later. The Facebook employee was embarrassed and shocked by the "confrontation" with the instructor, the termination letter indicated. The company feared making clients unhappy, Van Ness said. "We are in the business of providing great customer service. Unless a client requires us to specifically say `no' to something, we prefer to say `yes' whenever possible," an official wrote in the termination letter. Facebook, in a statement, declined to comment on Van Ness' case, saying it's against their policy to comment on decisions made by outside vendors. Van Ness said losing the job meant losing a third of her monthly income. But since her story went public, she said she landed a new job - where she's keeping the no cellphone rule. Fifty-five years ago today, five Army officers and a photographer stood directly under a 2-kiloton atomic blast at the Nevada Test Site, about 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, and survived. The five officers, who volunteered for the duty, and the cameraman, who did not, designated the July 19, 1957, test site with a hand-lettered sign as “Ground Zero, Population 5,” KPLU, a Seattle/Tacoma-based NPR station, said in a story marking the 55th anniversary of the blast. The intent of the Cold War test was to film the officers surviving the blast and convince U.S. military leaders of the time that using low-grade nuclear missiles in the air would be relatively safe for people on the ground, KPLU reported. obtained from government archives by AtomCentral.com, shows two F-89 jets zooming into view and one shooting off the missile carrying the atomic warhead. The officers are shown waiting during a countdown for the missile to detonate 18,500 feet above them. One officer, wearing sunglasses, looks up as the warhead explodes, at first in silence, followed by a roar, after which the sky goes black and the air turns to fire. The movie narrator shouts: “It’s happened! The mounds are vibrating. It is tremendous. Directly above our heads!” KPLU said the film was shot at the direction of Col. Arthur B. "Barney" Oldfield, public information officer for the Continental Air Defense Command in Colorado Springs. KPLU listed the test participants as Col. Sidney Bruce, Lt. Col. Frank P. Ball, Maj. Norman "Bodie" Bodinger, Maj. John Hughes, Don Lutrel, and photographer George Yoshitake. KPLU said it looked for death records on the five officers and said that as far as it could determine, at least two of them lived relatively long lives. The test was one of many that the government conducted with live participants in close proximity to nuclear blasts or to ground zero directly after explosions. In a 2010 interview in The New York Times, Yoshitake spoke about the effect of the tests on cameramen like himself who chronicled the events. “Quite a few have died from cancer,” said Yoshitake, then 82. “No doubt it was related to the testing.”

'Feathers and blood': Bird hits boy in face on high-speed rollercoaster A 12-year-old Monmouth County boy was struck by a bird while riding a rollercoaster at Six Flags in Jackson Township, N.J. Shane Matus, of Howell Township, told Philadelphia's NBC10.com that he was riding in the front car with his friend on the Kingda Ka rollercoaster around 5 p.m. Thursday when something slammed into his face. “When it hit me I was like, ‘What the-? Did somebody throw a ball or something?’ When I started spitting out feathers, I was like, that was a bird,” said Shane. Shane showed NBC10 the bruises and scratches on his neck and face from where the bird struck him. Shane believes the bird was a pigeon. “They say the bird exploded,” said Shane. “It hurt a lot for like three seconds. People behind us had feathers and blood all over them.” The coaster was returning to the station when Shane collided with the bird. He tells NBC10 he turned his head towards the parking lot when he heard a car alarm seconds before impact. “If that car alarm didn’t go off, it would’ve hit me dead in the eye,” said Shane. The 45-story Kingda Ka coaster, the world's tallest, reaches speeds of up to 128 mph. It was shut down for 30 minutes after the incident. An ambulance rushed Shane, who was at the theme park with his aunt, to the hospital. His father, Adam Matus, soon arrived. “I couldn’t believe it,” said Adam. “I mean what kind of freak accident is this?” A Great Adventure spokesperson told NBC10 that something like this had never happened before at the theme park. NBC10 asked Shane if he would ever go on the roller coaster again. “Yeah,” Shane replied. “But not in the front.”

Ohio woman attempts to break into jail; demands to be arrested An allegedly drunken Ohio woman baffled local law enforcement officers when she tried to break into a county jail and demanded that she be arrested, NBC station WLWT in Cincinnati reported. Officials said Tiffany Hurd was seen attemping to get in the jail by climbing a barb wire fence. Tiffany Hurd, 36, went to the Butler County Jail Sunday Morning when deputies saw her attempting to climb over a barbed-wire fence. She was advised to leave by staff and refused and said, "I want to be arrested." A corrections officer saw Hurd lying near the fence earlier as he was leaving the jail after finishing his shift. Deputies advised her to leave, but she refused, saying, "I want to be arrested." In a similar incident, a North Carolina man was arrested on July 21 for refusing to leave a jail on the day of his release until he was given a ride to a motel. The man was arrested and charged with second-degree trespassing.

Pennsylvania teen finds unexploded World War II-era mortar in backyard . A WWII-era mortar round found on a property adjacent to a central Pennsylvania military base was found to be inert after a police bomb squad cordoned off the area for more than an hour. A teen working in the family's Lebanon County yard discovered the mortar Monday. His parents called police, who used X-rays to determine it was just a training round. Fourteen-year-old Tyler Varvel was doing some yard work when something caught his eye. "Like it seemed shiny, so I flicked it with my shoe," Varvel told local TV station WGAL. "It was a bomb or mortar, or something." A spokesman for Fort Indiantown Gap says it's certainly possible to stumble upon old munitions in the area around the base from its days as an active duty training facility. Bomb specialists arrived and closed a nearby street for hours. They later determined Varvel stumbled upon a World War II-era mortar. It was found to be inert and was likely a practice round left behind by someone decades ago. The bomb squad took the mortar away for disposal. Staff Sgt. Matt Jones says anyone who stumbles upon such an artifact shouldn't touch it — it could still be live. And the family is thankful it's gone. "Pretty wild summer," Tyler said after the incident. His mother, Lora Varvel, said, "Something fun for the boys to talk about at school when they go back." ..

Police: Vermont man crushed cop cars with tractor MONTPELIER, Vt., Thu Aug 02 Working in a stout former bank building with windows closed and air conditioners humming, Orleans County sheriff's deputies didn't know what was happening in their parking lot until a neighbor called 911. A man on a big farm tractor, angry about his recent arrest for resisting arrest and marijuana possession, was rolling across their vehicles - five marked cruisers, one unmarked car and a transport van. By the time they ran outside, the tractor was down the driveway and out onto the road. With their vehicles crushed, "We had nothing to pursue him with," said Chief Deputy Philip Brooks. Thursday afternoon's incident ended when city police in Newport, the county seat of the northern Vermont county, caught up with Roger Pion, 34, a short distance away. No one was injured. At least two deputies had gone inside a few moments before after washing their vehicles, officials said. "Nobody was hurt. That's the thing everybody's got to cherish," said Sheriff Kirk Martin. Vermont State Police said in a statement that Pion would face seven counts of felony unlawful mischief, one count of misdemeanor unlawful mischief, one count aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, one count of gross negligent operation, and one count of leaving the scene of an accident. Pion was being held at the Northern State Correctional Center in Newport on $15,000 bail. Sheriffs said they did not know if Pion had a lawyer. A phone number for him could not be located. Martin estimated damage to the vehicles at more than $300,000; state police put it at more than $250,000. Not only were their roofs and hoods caved in, but "the radios are ruined, the radar detectors, the cages in the cars ... We're going to have to get the jaws of life up here to pry the trunks open and see about the rifles and shotguns," Martin said. Brooks said the destroyed vehicles constituted more than half the fleet of sheriff's cruisers in the rural county on the Canadian border. Others were out on patrol at the time of the incident.

PART 2- $50K bail for Vt. man accused of crushing cop cars NEWPORT, Vt., Fri Aug 03, A Vermont man who authorities said used a large farm tractor like a monster truck and drove over seven police vehicles, then tried to run over two officers who pursued him, was ordered held on $50,000 bail Friday. Orleans County sheriffs said Roger Pion, 34, of Newport, was angry over a recent arrest for resisting arrest and marijuana possession when he drove the tractor into the parking lot of the sheriff's department and rolled it multiple times across cruisers and a transport van parked in the lot. No one was injured in Thursday's incident. Sworn police statements filed at the court said Pion would face 14 charges. The most serious one, felony aggravated assault on a police officer, carries a penalty of up to 16 years in prison. Sheriffs said that after Pion left their lot, they were unable to pursue him because they had no intact vehicles. When two Newport City officers chased him, he suddenly started backing the tractor toward them. "I backed up in fear of our safety about ten to fifteen feet before bumping into another vehicle," wrote Newport Officer Tanner Jacobs, adding that "at this point the tractor was still backing up." He said he and his partner then left their vehicle to avoid getting run over. Converging city and state police and county sheriffs then surrounded Pion and ordered him from the tractor at gunpoint. He was found to be carrying a loaded pistol, authorities said. Sheriff's deputies got there in a borrowed civilian vehicle. Defense attorney David Sleigh said he would seek to have the aggravated assault charge dismissed. "There was no actual contact. He never came into threatening proximity of anyone," Sleigh said. "I understand if these deputies were annoyed, and there may be a personal measure of retribution" reflected in the aggravated assault charge. "But that does not equate to proof." After Pion's court appearance Friday, sheriff's deputies and fire and rescue crews in neighboring Derby, where the sheriff's department is located, were trying to salvage what they could from the crushed cruisers. They were using tools usually used to extract crash victims from crushed vehicles to pry open the cruisers' trunks. Chief Deputy Philip Brooks marveled that the rifle, shotgun and other items stored in his cruiser's trunk were unharmed. "Even my hat held its shape," he said. Brooks said the department moved into the former bank building in December. There was no video surveillance of the ungated parking lot. "I'm certain the security issues will be revisited," he said. Several other sheriffs' departments around Vermont offered to lend cruisers to Orleans County. State police offered cars they were preparing for auction. Sheriff Kirk Martin said in an interview at the county courthouse that he was in Boston, preparing to attend a Red Sox game on Law Enforcement Appreciation Day at Fenway Park, when he got word of the vehicular carnage back home. He hurried back north, with New Hampshire and Vermont State Police escorting him. Martin missed the game, in which Boston lost to the Minnesota Twins, 5-0. "Even watching them lose yesterday would have been better" than what he came home to, he said.

| HOLY CRAP!! ======================================= Pa. road crew paints yellow line over dead raccoon The "squirrelly" configuration of a western Pennsylvania road helped cause a state road crew to paint a double-yellow line over a dead raccoon. Motorcyclist Sean McAfee snapped a photo of the mistake before it could be cleaned up and submitted it to the Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown (http://bit.ly/MkHa1K). He says he almost crashed, he was laughing so hard. PennDOT spokesman John Ambrosini says paint crews usually have a foreman on the job who clears away any dead animals before the paint-spraying truck equipment passes by. This crew didn't have a foreman and the equipment was too big to turn around in traffic, remove the animal and repair the paint. He says the "the squirrelly geometry" of the narrow road didn't help. But the crew did try to stop the paint gun.
