Today Would Have Been John Lennons 71st Birthday... Yoko Ono has marked John Lennon's 71st birthday by switching a light beacon on in Iceland tonight (October 9). The singer turned on the 'Imagine Peace Tower' on Vioey Island, near Reykjavik at 9pm (BST). The beam of light shot 4,000 metres into the air and it projected the words 'Imagine Peace'. The tower is lit every year on Lennon's birthday until December 8, the anniversary of his death. Ono officially switched the tower of light on for the first time in 2007. "I hope the 'Imagine Peace Tower' will give light to the strong wishes of world peace from all corners of the planet and give encouragement, inspiration and a sense of solidarity in a world now filled with fear and confusion," Ono said in a statement. "Let us come together to realise a peaceful world." ++++++++++ George Harrison's death to be marked with two concerts in Liverpool Two concerts have been announced in Liverpool to mark the 10th anniversary of late Beatle George Harrison's death. Acts he signed to The Beatles' Apple label including Brute Force and The Radha Krishna Temple along with The Mersey Beatles, Singh Strings, Andre Barreau from The Bootleg Beatles and the Dovedale School Choir, will be among those who will perform at the gigs at St George's Hall and The Cavern Club in his home city. The St George's Hall concert will be free and visitors from the Radha Krishna Temple will feed all the performers and audiences at both concerts free of charge, reports BBC News. Harrison died of lung cancer on November 29, 2001 at the age of 58. Film legend Martin Scorsese's documentary on Harrison, Living In The Material World, will be released on DVD on Monday (October 10). The project has been co-produced with the guitarist's widow Olivia and will feature home movies and interviews with the surviving Beatles members. The film traces Harrison's life from his musical beginnings in Liverpool, through his time as a filmmaker and philanthropist. ++++++++++ Paul McCartney weds in nostalgia-filled ceremony A hint of autumnal Beatlemania was in the air Sunday as Paul McCartney, for the second time in his improbable life, climbed the steps of venerable Old Marylebone Town Hall to take himself a bride. True, thousands of heartbroken female fans crowded the columned building in 1969 when he married Linda Eastman, and only a few hundred showed up Sunday as he wed another American, Nancy Shevell, at the very same registry office. But the feeling this time was not regret at the loss of a bachelor heartthrob. Instead there was joy that McCartney, regarded as a national treasure and revered the world over, seemed happy again. The 69-year-old former Beatle appeared proud, content and eager to share his joy with the crowd, raising his bride's hand in triumph as he walked down the steps after they became man and wife in a simple civil ceremony attended by close family and friends, including drummer Ringo Starr and Barbara Walters, a second cousin of the bride. "I feel absolutely wonderful," McCartney told fans as he arrived at his home after the ceremony. He was expected to sing a new song he had composed for his bride at the reception. Gone was the memory of McCartney's terribly unhappy marriage to Heather Mills, which ended in 2008 in an ugly public divorce. Remembered was his marriage to Eastman, a serene union that lasted nearly three decades until her life was cut short by breast cancer, leaving McCartney alone and adrift despite his fame and wealth. The ceremony Sunday afternoon was everything his wedding to Mills was not: simple, understated, almost matter of fact. By contrast, McCartney and Mills married in an over-the-top lavish spectacle at a remote Irish castle that was disrupted several times by news helicopters flying overhead, hoping for a glimpse of the A-list guests. This time, the smiles seemed genuine. The affection - and rose petals and confetti - showered on McCartney and his bride captured his particular place in British life. Long gone are the days when the Beatles divided Britain between young and old, or between hippies and straights. The band is revered as part of a glorious musical and cultural era when Britain seemed a more confident place. There was no controversy whatsoever when McCartney received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 1997. Today Sir Paul - or Macca, as he's usually known - is celebrated as a musical legend who is still composing and releasing CDs, even if they no longer routinely shoot to No. 1 on the charts. His forays into opera, ballet, painting and poetry have not been critical successes, but none of these have tarnished his reputation. Shevell, 51, appeared radiant and composed in an elegant, ivory gown cut just above the knee. She wore a white flower in her long dark hair, and only light makeup and lipstick. The dress was designed by McCartney's daughter, Stella, a star in the fashion world who also helped concoct the three-course vegetarian feast served to guests at the reception at McCartney's home in St. John's Wood, a property he bought in 1965, when the Beatles were topping the charts with metronomic regularity. McCartney, who has long admitted to tinting his hair to keep out the gray, looked youthful in a well-cut blue suit and pale blue, skinny tie. The couple married on what would have been band mate John Lennon's 71st birthday. Some guests speculated that Lennon would have been among the guests had he lived, with the rift between them having healed. The wedding party included Beatrice, McCartney's young daughter with Mills, who had been expected to serve as flower girl. McCartney is credited for having survived a number of tragedies - the 1980 murder of one-time songwriting partner Lennon, the loss of his beloved first wife Linda, the 2001 death of guitarist George Harrison and the public breakdown of his marriage to Mills - with his upbeat nature intact. Mills, a much younger model who had lost part of her leg when she was hit by a motorcycle, tried to battle McCartney in the court of public opinion during their divorce. She accused him of cruelty and sought a gargantuan $250 million settlement. But her charges against McCartney didn't stick. Few if any fans turned against him, and the divorce court judge ruled against her, calling her demands exorbitant and unfair. The very public spat opened McCartney's vast fortune to unprecedented public scrutiny. Long rumored to be pop's first billionaire, he was found to have assets worth about $800 million, including works by Picasso and Renoir and luxury real estate in the United States, Britain and elsewhere. His wealth reflects in part his incredible global popularity - in recent years he has filled stadiums from Rio to Russia, producing tens of millions of dollar of revenue with each tour. Shevell, who is independently wealthy and quite successful in her own right, is not seen by the British public as being interested in McCartney's fortune. The couple met four years ago in the Hamptons, a seaside playground for the rich and famous on the eastern tip of Long Island in New York. Some reports say that Walters played matchmaker, inviting McCartney to a dinner she knew her second cousin Shevell would attend. Walters said she cried during the ceremony, which she called "beautiful and wonderful." Shevell, who was married for more than 20 years to attorney Bruce Blakeman and serves on the board of New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority, is also a vice president of a lucrative New Jersey-based trucking company owned by her father. She has stayed out of the public eye since taking up with McCartney, refraining from commenting on her relationship with the man once known as "the cute one" in the world's most popular band. She has a few things in common with Eastman: like McCartney's first wife, she is American and affluent. Unlike Eastman, who performed with McCartney's post-Beatles band Wings, Shevell is not expected to join her husband onstage on his extended world tours. She joins a pantheon of "Beatle wives" - each band member married more than once, and many of the unions were troubled. Lennon abruptly left his first wife for Yoko Ono, and Cynthia Lennon has complained in print about his abusive treatment of her and his neglect of their son, Julian. His relationship with Ono was punctuated with occasional breakups, but is often portrayed as a happy marriage, and since his death she has curated his works and burnished his legend. Starr's first marriage also ended in divorce, but he has had a long, stable union with his second wife, the actress Barbara Bach, who joined him at Sunday's ceremony. The two even went through a recovery program together when Starr decided to confront his alcoholism. Harrison's first marriage - to the model Pattie Boyd - ended in divorce when she left him for guitarist Eric Clapton. He had a long happy marriage to Olivia Harrison, who plays an important role in the recently released Martin Scorsese film about Harrison. If the mood Sunday is any indication, the man responsible for classics like "Penny Lane" and the angst-ridden "Eleanor Rigby" may find pleasure and contentment in the years ahead. That's certainly what his fans are hoping.

IS PAUL McCARTNEY CONVERTING TO JUDAISM? Paul McCartney is reportedly going to convert to Judaism, according to The National Enquirer. According to a source close to the former Beatle, McCartney, who's new bride Nancy Shevell is a practicing Jew, has begun studying the religion and has told friends that the conversion will be finalized next year. The couple's non-denominational October 9th service was conducted by Superintendent Registrar Alison Cathcart. The day before, the couple was seen attending St. John's Wood's Liberal Jewish Synagogue in London to mark Yom Kippur. McCartney's parents were both of Irish decent, with his mother Mary being Catholic and his father Jim, a Protestant. McCartney was baptized a Roman Catholic but is non-practicing. His first wife, Linda Eastman -- who's family's real name was Epstein -- was also Jewish, although they raised their family religion free -- save for the celebration of Christmas each year. IN OTHER McCARTNEY NEWS McCartney and Shevell returned to New York City late last week from their West Indies honeymoon in Mustique, and celebrated the wedding once again on Friday (October 21st) at Manhattan's Bowery Hotel. Ultimate Classic Rock reported that among the high profile guests on-hand were Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon, Keith Richards, Elvis Costello, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Shevell's cousin Barbara Walters, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Ralph Lauren, Jon Bon Jovi, Dave Grohl, and actors Steve Buscemi and actress Aida Turturro. •McCartney will release his next album, the predominantly standards set, My Valentine, in February. Sources tell us that along with McCartney's favorite romantic chestnuts, there will be a few new originals in the batch.

Here come the sons: Four decades after the Fab Four split, McCartney Jnr talks of forming a band with the Beatles' boys 3 April 2012 It is 42 years since the world’s most famous band broke up, following an acrimonious split between former best friends Paul McCartney and John Lennon. Now, however, Sir Paul’s only son James has revealed a new group featuring the offspring of the Fab Four could become a reality. James – who was last night due to follow in The Beatles’ footsteps by playing the Cavern Club in Liverpool – has revealed he would be keen to form a ‘next generation’ Beatles with the sons of the other band members. The 34-year-old said he was ‘up for it’ and added that Lennon’s youngest son Sean, 36, and George Harrison’s only son, Dhani, 33, had also shown support for the idea. He said Ringo Starr’s eldest son, Zak, 46 – who has achieved success as a drummer with Oasis and The Who – was less keen, but suggested Zak’s brother Jason, 44, also a drummer, could fill that role. He said: ‘I don’t think it’s something Zak wants to do. Maybe Jason would want to do it. I’d be up for it. Sean seemed to be into it. Dhani seemed to be into it.’ Singer-songwriter James has played guitar on two of his father’s more recent albums, while his father has co-produced two of his son’s EPs. James, whose mother Linda died in 1998, was known to have fallen out with his father during Sir Paul’s second marriage to Heather Mills. Asked about his relationship with his father, James admitted it had been ‘difficult’ on occasion. But he added: ‘It’s amazing. Sometimes in the past, a few years ago, it can be [sic] difficult, it can be tense, like families can get. But beyond that it’s beautiful. ‘He’s a genius, he’s beyond genius, and he’s a big inspiration. Very intellectual and amazing at what he does, so it’s great fun.’ On Monday James played the 320-capacity Borderline venue in central London and among those watching were his elder sister, fashion designer Stella McCartney, 40, as well as Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono, 79. In an interview with Radio 5 Live yesterday, James spoke of his relationship with Yoko, saying she reminded him of his late mother. ‘She [Yoko] is great,’ he said. ‘She reminds me a lot of my mum. I think John chose Yoko and dad chose Linda. I guess they’re pretty different as well but to me she [Yoko] just seems quite similar in some ways.’ New fab four? Computer trickery shows Jason Starkey, Sean Lennon, James McCartney and Dhani Harrison in their fathers' Sgt Pepper outfits

McCartney turns 70, shows no sign of slowing down LONDON, Mon Jun 18 Paul McCartney can still rock at 70. What more could a former Beatle want? He celebrated his birthday in private Monday, perhaps resting up between gigantic gigs this summer. But he shows no sign of slowing down as his music is passed on to generations too young to have seen him in Wings, much less the Beatles. Once a pot-smoking counterculture rebel, "Sir Paul" is very much part of the British establishment now, closing Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee concert earlier this month with a mix of favorites that included a raucous "All My Loving," one of the Beatles' first smash hits. He's also preparing for a featured role as the final act at the July 27 opening ceremony of the London Olympics - just another global audience of a billion or more for one of the most popular performers in pop history. Even McCartney may be a bit nervous for that one, but he won't be short of material: Consider a back catalog that includes "Yesterday," "Eleanor Rigby," "Penny Lane" and a few dozen other classics, including perennial crowd pleasers "Let It Be" and "Hey Jude." It's been a strong year for McCartney, who in October married his third wife, dark-haired American heiress Nancy Shevell, closing the book on his failed union and messy divorce from second wife Heather Mills. His first wife, Linda, died of breast cancer in 1998. McCartney has appeared relaxed and almost jovial in recent months as he eases into his role as one of rock's eminent elder statesmen, a position he shares with Bob Dylan (71) and Mick Jagger (6 . And while there are plenty of other musicians of his generation still playing, McCartney manages to keep his act squarely in the mainstream, rather than becoming just another oldies show. He still puts out new music and attracts new fans. His latest album, "Kisses on the Bottom," was released in February. McCartney has admitted dyeing his hair (which sometimes seems to have an odd burgundy tint), but his musical ability has not diminished with age. He can still captivate a large arena with a simple acoustic performance of "Blackbird" and can shift gears at the drop of a hat for a mean, Vegas-style, pyrotechnic-aided rendition of "Live and Let Die," a James Bond theme song that has become a favorite part of his repertoire. John Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, tweeted birthday wishes to McCartney on Monday. And Paul Weller made a one-day-only digital release of the Beatles song "Birthday" as a tribute, with proceeds going to charity. In the run-up to his birthday, McCartney, a longtime vegetarian, urged the public to cut back on meat consumption to help cut greenhouse gas emissions and ease the global warming crisis.

Why Ringo Starr isn't marking 50-year Beatles milestone Ringo Starr turns 72 on Saturday. But another mile marker - 50 years since he became a Beatle - is also being celebrated this year - just not necessarily by Starr. He told CBS News he hasn't thought about the milestone at all. "It's just another number, isn't it? You know, that's how it is. ... It used to be just two years. Ooh, now five. Now 40," Starr said. When asked recently in New York if there will be a special celebration, Starr said, "Well, Paul (McCartney) and I will go to the pub, you mean? No." If he sounds at all sour, that's because Starr has spent a good part of his adult life trying to distance himself from the Fab Four. That journey, however, has never taken him off stage. He said of performing, "I love being on stage, because one, I'm down there as the big show off. And...I get to play with all these great musicians. So it's a win-win for me." Starr's band, Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band, started touring in 1989, and featured a rotating cast of musicians, including Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton. Now, 12 incarnations later, Starr says the show's only getting better. "You know, it used to be two years between each tour," he said. "Now, well, I haven't had a break in a while, so I'm playing more and more, you know? ... I have the energy, I don't know. It's just one of those turning points." And these days, more young people are attending the shows, Starr said. "We're not overloaded with, you know, people our age," he said. "I check the whole room out. ... I'm checking the room as I'm working. And I'm listening for anyone who says, 'Love you, Ringo.' 'I love you, too.'" It was on the road where Starr happened upon his latest hobby, creating pop art using computer paint programs. He decided to print and sell the images for charity, and at a recent event, some sold for $12,000. Starr says the computer art keeps him busy. "It's for a good cause," he said. "There's more in (the art) than I even imagined." He pointed out a drawing that has a dog and a man hidden inside the picture. Star joked, "It's very deep." Starr's also embracing another electronic medium - Twitter. He said he wanted to join the revolution. "I'm just seeing what's going down," he said. "I'm doing my part." Revolution is familiar territory for Starr, whose back-beat helped ignite a musical one five decades ago. But these days, he's just looking for a little peace. Starr said, "I'm not a violent man. I am Mr. Peace and Love, for God sake. I mean that in a loving way." Riadas Retort: I love Ringo, and there wouldnt have been a BEATLES without him, but his attitude kind of throws me...I know stars dont like to be type-cast, but I think he ought to be a little less apathetic.

I agree. Ringo's actual drumming talent isn't all that great and if he wasn't a Beatle, he wouldn't be in music at all by now. Even Ringo admitted Paul was a better drummer and drummed on the more difficult songs in the studio. He should be thankful for such a gifted existence based on music he played for a few years before the band disolved. As a drummer, he's pretty inconsequential.

John Lennon's killer gets parole hearing this week ALDEN, N.Y., Sat Aug 18, 01:04 PM Officials say John Lennon's killer, who is up for parole for the seventh time, could go before the parole board as early as Tuesday. New York Department of Corrections spokeswoman Linda Foglia says Mark David Chapman is scheduled to be interviewed by members of the parole board this week. She says they could make a decision by Thursday or Friday. Chapman shot Lennon in December 1980 outside the Manhattan apartment building where the former Beatle lived. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced in 1981 to 20 years to life in prison. He was denied parole for the sixth time in September 2010. Chapman is being held at the Wende (WEHN'-dee) Correctional Facility outside Buffalo.

| AMEN TO THAT!! ============================ PAUL MCCARTNEY sends support to Russian punks LONDON, Thu Aug 16, 12:03 PM Paul McCartney has sent support to a Russian punk band whose members face prison for a stunt against President Vladimir Putin. In a letter released Thursday, the former Beatle urged three members of all-female band Pussy Riot to "stay strong" and called on authorities to allow them freedom of speech. McCartney said that "I and many others like me who believe in free speech will do everything in our power to support you and the idea of artistic freedom." The band members have been in jail for more than five months because of an anti-Putin prank in Moscow's main cathedral, and face a maximum seven years in jail. Celebrities including Madonna and Bjork have called for them to be freed. A judge is due to rule on their case Friday. Anti-Putin Band Pussy Riot Found Guilty in Russian Court, Handed 2-Year Sentence Aug. 17, 2012 Three members of a Russian all-female punk band today were found guilty of "hooliganism driven by religious hatred" and sentenced to two years in prison from the time of their initial detention. "The court believes that such goals of punishment as restoration of social justice, the defendants' reform and the prevention of similar crimes may only be achieved if they are sentenced to imprisonment and serve their terms," the judge said, according to the Russian Interfax news agency. The trial has sparked outrage around the world and drawn the attention from a chorus of Western music stars, including Paul McCartney, Madonna and Sting. The band, called Pussy Riot, had been in jail since February after performing what they called a "punk prayer" on the altar of Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral, asking for divine intervention to rid Russia of Vladimir Putin, who was then running for a third term as president. The sentence was less than the seven-year maximum and also less than the three years in prison many observers expected. President Putin recently said he believed the women should not be treated too harshly. The band was defiant before today's court session. One member said they would not ask Putin for a pardon. Outside the court, amid heavy police presence, supporters wearing the band's signature colorful baklava knit caps held a rally and were joined by prominent politicians and opposition leaders. Several, including former world chess champion Garry Kasparov and leftist protest leader Sergei Udaltsov, were arrested. Others placed baklavas on the heads of statues around town in silent protest. The case was seen as a barometer of Putin's tolerance of dissent after a winter of unprecedented protests called on him to go. Rallies in support of the band were held around the world before the verdict. The case also captured the attention of some of the world's most famous musicians. Paul McCartney Thursday added his voice to the growing list of music stars in calling on Russia to set the women free. Pop diva Madonna last week spoke out against their detention from the stage during a concert in Moscow. Other artists, including Sting, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Franz Ferdinand have also used their recent Moscow concerts as a platform to call for Pussy Riot's release. A recent poll released by the independent Levada Center found 44 percent of Russians believed the trial was objective, while only 18 percent believed the outcome was determined by the powers that be. Another 17 percent were doubtful of the trial's objectivity.

Berry Gordy, Paul McCartney to play Motown piano DETROIT, Thu Aug 30, 03:54 PM In town for a concert last summer, Paul McCartney made his first-ever visit to Detroit's Motown Museum, the legendary two-story "Hitsville USA" building where a generation's worth of musical gems were created. McCartney, a contemporary of Motown stars such as Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, "was just thrilled to be in the space," said Lina Stephens, the museum's curator, who gave McCartney and his bandmates a guided tour that day. McCartney was also excited to come across a pair of pianos. "He came to the first piano - even though there's a sign on it that says, `Please do not touch' - he went up and played the piano," Stephens said. "He said, `I'm sorry I have to,' and he played." When the group arrived at Studio A - the famed Motown recording studio - McCartney found piano No. 3. This one, though, had a cover over the keys. He was told it couldn't be played due to deterioration, and McCartney moved on. The next day, he called with an offer to have the damaged 1877 Steinway grand fully restored. More than a year later, that process has been completed. The restored 9-foot Victorian rosewood will have its coming-out party at a Sept. 18 charity event in New York City before returning to its home on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit. McCartney and Motown founder Berry Gordy will play the piano at the New York event, dubbed "Project: Harmony," said Motown Museum Board of Trustees Chairwoman Robin Terry, Gordy's grandniece. The event will benefit the Motown Museum. "We'll unveil the piano and then the two of them will play the piano, and we'll have some fun and leave it to them to make of that what they will," Terry said in an interview with The Associated Press on Thursday. The piano will eventually go back on display at Studio A, where it has been housed since the museum's opening in 1985. Terry said the piano made its way to Motown when the studio acquired Golden World Records in 1967, a facility that was redubbed Motown Studio B and used by musicians and songwriters to create music by Wonder, Gaye and other Motown greats. The piano was restored by Steinway & Sons to professional recording quality, Terry said, with all of its internal components - soundboard, keys, hammers, pins and strings - restored. The piano's case was left as is to preserve its authenticity, while the legs, which were not original, were replaced. While the original strings and hammers were worn beyond repair, they were retained and will be returned to the museum for exhibit. McCartney's publicist didn't return a message from the AP seeking comment, but Terry said: "Paul McCartney, he orchestrated the process, moving the piano, getting it to Steinway. ... It wasn't just a monetary thing. His soul was in it. He wanted to make sure that this contribution was made, and he followed it through from beginning to end." While they didn't cross paths all that often during their respective heydays, The Beatles and Motown artists were members of a mutual admiration society. Beatles manager Brian Epstein did promote Motown revues in the United Kingdom, which were popular with fans and stars alike. And Four Tops singer Abdul "Duke" Fakir recalls being at a party with The Beatles, where the Fab Four peppered his group with questions about how they sang their harmonies and achieved other elements of their sound. According to Stephens, McCartney "was pretty tickled" during his tour to find a photo of himself and Beatles bandmates Ringo Starr, George Harrison and John Lennon alongside Gordy's father and Gordy's three children. McCartney "talked about the fact that he had always heard about and been conscious of Motown and getting his hands on those first Motown recordings and things," Stephens said. "It was kind of completing a circle for him in a lot of respects."

Paul McCartney revisits the '60s for new DVD Sir Paul McCartney has revisited his 1960s heyday to record a full-length commentary on The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour movie. A digitally remastered version of the Fab Four's surreal 1967 bus-trip film is to be released on DVD later this year, complete with surround sound, deleted scenes, outtakes, and a book of previously unseen photographs. The special edition also contains a commentary from McCartney, in which he details his memories of the shoot and his personal insight into the film. Introducing the movie, he says, "Ladies and gentlemen, what you are about to see is the product of our imaginations and believe me, at this point they are quite vivid." The restored version of Magical Mystery Tour will hit stores in October.
