Should Public Employee Salaries Be Capped in NJ? One Lawmaker Says "Absolutely!" If it seems to you like the salaries for executives running public sector Commissions, Agencies and Associations have spiraled out of control…you're not alone. State Senator Mike Doherty is drafting legislation that would prohibit any state employee from making a higher salary than the Governor. He says "the Governor makes 175 thousand dollars a year - that's a pretty good salary - he's got the toughest job of any public employee in the state of New Jersey, and no public employee should make more than the Governor." Doherty says his measure "would cover anybody who works for the state, the County, municipal government, or any school boards…if you take a look at the ranks of school superintendents, and some of the executives at the various Commissions and Authorities, these folks are making well over 175 thousand dollars a year…the time has come to get the public sector back in line with what folks in the private sector are making." When asked if his measure would cover top officials at organizations like the NJEA - where the Executive Director was paid 550 thousand dollars in 2007 - Doherty said he would like it to apply to those folks, but he's not sure if it's possible because "legislation is amended as it goes through the Committee process, you hear from folks, somebody may bring up a legal issue - I'm open to talk to all those folks." He expects to have strong bipartisan support when the measure is introduced in the coming weeks. Millennium Radio NJ - Copyright 2010. All Rights Reserved.
